Police shoot, kill man outside Glenn Dale daycare

A man who was wielding an axe  outside an in-home daycare in the Glenn Dale area was shot and killed by three Prince George’s County Police officers Thursday, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 3 p.m. in the 11400 block of Glenn Dale Ridge Road, said Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a county police spokesman. He said officers were initially dispatched to that address for a report of an armed man.

The man was apparently involved in a child custody dispute and was trying to take his children from the daycare, according to Rodriguez. The daycare provider had called the children's mother, he said, and she had instructed the provider not to turn over the children to their father.

The provider called police, Rodriguez said.

By the time officers arrived, said Rodriguez, the man was gone. But he returned a short time later when at least one officer was still on the scene.

What happened next is still being investigated. Rodriguez said the man got out of his vehicle carrying an axe, and came toward three officers.

"The officers felt threatened, and they discharged their firearms,” he said.

The man was struck by the gunfire and pronounced dead on the scene, Rodriguez said. No one else was hurt.
