Pr. George’s officers shoot man in Landover

Prince George's County police officers shot a man who was "displaying his handgun" to residents in the Landover area Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 pm in the 1800 block of Ray Leonard Road, a dead-end street in a neighborhood that sits in the shadow of FedEx Field. Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a Prince George's County police spokesman, said a resident called to report a man displaying a handgun, and officers arrived on the scene in less than a minute.

The suspect brandished a handgun after officers “engaged” him, according to Rodriguez, and the officers fired.

Reports from the police's computer-aided dispatch system indicate that the man pointed his gun at at least one resident and officers or residents believed he might have been high on drugs. Rodriguez said he could not immediately confirm those reports.

The suspect was struck at least once and transported to a hospital, Rodriguez said. His condition was not immediately known.

The shooting is the second involving Prince George's police officers in four days. On Friday, an officer shot and wounded a man who police say was backing a car in his direction.
