Pr. William high school student killed in fatal wreck

A Prince William County high school student was killed Thursday in a mid-day crash in Manassas, police say.

Michael M. Schmelzinger, 17, of Manassas was a student at Osbourn Park High School, according to a news release. Schmelzinger was traveling south on Lake Jackson Drive when he left the roadway and struck a tree, police say. He was pronounced dead at the scene near the 10600 block of Lake Jackson Drive.

Schmelzinger was the only occupant in his 2008 Ford Mustang, police say, and no one else was injured. Speed was a primary factor in the collision, police said.
