Pr. William mother faces child neglect, drug charges

A Prince William County mother, whose child was found wandering the streets alone, was accused of child neglect Thursday when she returned home with a bottle of wine and marijuana, Prince William police said.

Shamika K. Dunn, 21, of the 3400 block of Castle Hill Drive was charged with felony child neglect, possession of marijuana and drinking in public. She was released on a $1,500 unsecured bond, police said.

Police said they responded to the area of Cherrydale Road and Dale Boulevard about 8 a.m. after a caller reported that she was with a young girl she saw walking in the street alone. The 3-year-old was able to guide police back to her home on Castle Drive. When police arrived, the front door was open and another family member was in the house.

Although Dunn was not home, she returned while police were at the house. Police said she was carrying a half-bottle of wine and marijuana. Police said the family member in the home is not facing charges because that member was not asked to watch the girl and did not know the mother was gone, police said.

This is the second Prince William resident to be charged this week with felony child neglect. On Tuesday, day-care provider Maleighia G. Shockey, 23, was charged with two counts of felony child neglect after two children she was babysitting wandered off into the neighborhood.

The court dates for both cases are unavailable, police said.
