Prince William County police are investigating the death of a Woodbridge man who jumped out of a hotel window early Thursday morning and then darted through traffic.

Police said they were called to Jefferson Davis Highway and Gordon Boulevard around 2:30 a.m. for reports of a suspicious person. The caller said a man jumped out of the third-story window of the Inns of Virginia, on Annapolis Way, and landed on the hood of a vehicle below.

When officers arrived, they saw Wendell M. Bates, 47, running down Route 1, police said. Bates tried to run into traffic several times, but officers caught him, police said.

After fire and rescue officials arrived Bates lost consciousness, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
