A pregnant woman who was standing on the balcony of her District apartment building Thursday evening was hit in the leg by a stray bullet, D.C. police said.

The victim was on the second-floor balcony in the 3900 block of First St. SE when she heard some people having an argument in the alley below, said Capt. Byron B. Hope of the Seventh District. Shots were fired and the woman was hit in the leg as she was running back inside her apartment.

The woman, who is eight months pregnant, was treated at an area hospital. “The wounds she sustained have nothing to do with the baby. The baby is fine,” Hope said.

Hope said witnesses gave varying information about how many people were standing around before the argument began. Detectives are pursuing leads, Hope said.

The incident happened in the Washington Highlands neighborhood, which lies east of the Anacostia Freeway. Hope said that the shooting was unusual for the area. “We really haven’t had any incident in that particular block in quite some time so this is something that’s out of the ordinary.”
