Peter Labovitz, the president of the a Connection Newspapers in Northern Virginia, was sentenced Tuesday to six months in prison for failing to pay employment taxes to the federal government, prosecutors announced.

Labovitz pleaded guilty in July in Alexandria’s federal court to willfully failing to pay over to the IRS the federal taxes for a six-month period in 2007. Prosecutors said he failed to timely turn over more than $940,000 in taxes that had been withheld from employees. In addition to the prison term, U.S. Magistrate Judge John F. Anderson ordered Labovitz to pay $647,510 in restitution to the IRS.
