Prince George’s police shoot, kill armed man

A man with a gun was shot and killed by Prince George's County police Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

Cpl. Larry Johnson said the shooting occurred a few minutes after noon in the 6700 block of Valley Park Road in Capitol Heights. He said heavily armed officers responding to "a barricade situation" at that address encountered an armed man and shot him during a confrontation.

Police said the 47-year-old man, who they did not immediately identify, had called Maryland National Capital Park Police and said he was having trouble at work and was suicidal.

When Prince George’s County officers arrived, the man came outside with a handgun, police said. He refused to drop the weapon, police said, and waved the gun in a “threatening” manner.

Several officers fired shots at him, police said. No other details were immediately available.
