Prison for former Va. county official

GOOCHLAND, Va. — Former Goochland County Treasurer Brenda Grubbs will spend four years in prison for embezzling nearly $200,000 from the county.

Media outlets report that Goochland County Chief Circuit Judge Timothy K. Sanner sentenced Grubbs Tuesday to 40 years in prison, and then suspended all but four years.

Sanner also barred Grubbs from using the Internet and prohibited her from holding a position that would allow her to handle money for others.

The 54-year-old Grubbs pleaded guilty in August to a 20-count indictment. She was arrested Feb. 2 and resigned nine days later from the office where she had worked since 1988.

Authorities have said nearly all the money went to a Nigerian who had met Grubbs on the Internet.
