Prison for Va. woman in 2-year-old girl’s death

SUFFOLK, Va. — A Suffolk woman will spend more than seven years in prison on charges stemming from the drug-related death of her 2-year-old stepgranddaughter.

Kimberly Artis pleaded guilty last September to involuntary manslaughter and child neglect.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the 40-year-old Artis was sentenced Monday in Suffolk Circuit Court.

Prosecutors say Destiny Riddick and another child found a candy container containing suboxone in Artis’ bedroom in July 2011. Destiny ingested an unknown amount of the drug, which is used to treat addiction to heroin and similar drugs. The child was found unresponsive the next morning. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Artis’ boyfriend, Steven Wade Bullock, was sentenced on similar charges last month to more than seven years in prison.
