Prison for Virginia mother in infant’s suffocation death

CHESTERFIELD, Va. — A Chesterfield County woman convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the suffocation of her infant daughter will spend four years in prison.

Twenty-five-year-old Robin Imami Varner pleaded guilty in February. She also pleaded guilty to felony child neglect.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Chesterfield Circuit Judge Harold W. Burgess sentenced Varner on Wednesday to 20 years in prison, with all but four years suspended.

Prosecutors say Varner placed several pillows and a blanket over her crying 5-month-old daughter, Josephina Lee, on Jan. 3, 2011, to muffle the infant.
