Route 50 reopens after overnight car accident injures several

A two-car wreck on Route 50 sent three people to the hospital and closed a portion of the highway as first responders tended to the injured, police said.

The crash occurred about 11 p.m. on eastbound Route 50, just west of Route 197 in Bowie, Prince George’s County police said.

One of the victims had to be transported to the hospital by helicopter.

Police said the accident took place when a driver on the road swerved to avoid a deer. The conditions of the victims could not be learned.

All eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed for more than three hours and reopened around 2:40 a.m.
