Search continues for missing swimmer

The search continued Saturday for a young man who disappeared while swimming in the Triadelphia Reservoir in upper Montgomery County.

Authorities identified the man as 21-year-old Bruce Yansen, who is suspected of drowning in the popular recreational spot in Brookeville near Route 97. Yansen had been swimming with two friends Friday when he went under, according to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. WSSC did not provide additional information about Yansen.

The search was called off Friday at about 8:30 p.m. because of darkness but continued Saturday with help from the Howard and Montgomery county fire and rescue departments.

The reservoir is a popular destination for fishing and kayaking, but it is off-limits to swimmers because it is also used as a water supply.

On Saturday, WSSC closed Triadelphia Recreation Area and the Big Branch Recreation area. Greenbridge and Pig Tail Recreation Areas are open, but no boats can be launched from either location while the search continues.
