An armed security guard was shot and wounded Thursday night in a Laurel area grocery store, Prince George’s County police said.

The shooting occurred just inside the door of the Bottom Dollar Food store in the 12600 block of Laurel-Bowie Road about 7:55 p.m., said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a police spokesman. The guard was taken to a hospital in serious, but believed to not be life-threatening condition, Johnson said.

Two men, who were described only as wearing masks, also took the guard’s firearm.

It was not immediately clear whether the guard was shot during an attempted robbery, police said.

It also wasn’t known whether the guard’s gun was used against him or if another weapon was fired, Johnson said.

The men fled in a light blue SUV. Detectives were looking at surveillance video and interviewed about a half dozen witnesses who were in the store at the time of the shooting, officials said.
