One person was killed in an altercation with sheriff’s deputies in Fauquier County early Friday, authorities said.
According to Virginia State Police, the confrontation that resulted in the fatal shooting started with a single-vehicle crash around 4 a.m. at the intersection of Tacketts Mill and Aquia roads in Fauquier County. When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they found the car abandoned, officials said.
An investigation led deputies to a home in the 12000 block of Tacketts Mill Road.
Because the home is near the Fauquier County-Stafford County line, deputies from both counties responded to the scene, authorities said.
When they entered the home, a man allegedly attacked one of the deputies, police said. In response, at least one deputy opened fire, and the alleged attacker was killed.
Virginia State Police are conducting the investigation of the incident, which is ongoing. They have not released the identity of the man who was killed.
Because interviews are still being conducted, officials also declined to say whether the deputy or deputies responsible for the shooting work for the Fauquier or Stafford sheriff’s office.
The deputy who was attacked was treated for his injuries at the scene.
