Shooting in Columbia Heights

A man was shot Tuesday evening in the Columbia Heights area of Northwest Washington.

The shooting occurred a few minutes before 7 p.m. on Columbia Road NW, near 15th Street.

According to initial reports, the man’s wounds did not appear to be life-threatening. Officer Paul Metcalf, a police department spokesman, said he was reported to be breathing and conscious when found.

It was not clear who shot the man or for what reason.

The site was a couple of blocks west of the Columbia Heights Metro station, and also near the intersection of Columbia Road and 16th Street, two thoroughfares that carry heavy commuter traffic at the end of the workday.

It appeared that streets in the area would be shut down while police investigated.
