Springfield, Va., woman killed in Beltway crash

A Springfield, Va., woman was killed Tuesday afternoon after she lost control of her SUV on the Capital Beltway and crashed into a guardrail and tow truck, police said.

The woman, Kristin Bourkland, 35, was headed south on I-495 near Branch Avenue when she veered off the roadway and into a guardrail, police said. After that collision, her Chevrolet Equinox then veered back onto the Beltway and ran into a tow truck, police said.

Bourkland was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead, police said. It remains unclear why she veered into the guardrail, police said.
