Sterling apartment explosion causes evacuation

A small explosion in a Sterling apartment building resulted in the evacuation of several apartment units Thursday but no one was injured, according to Loudoun Fire and Rescue.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Laura Rinehart said the explosion, which occurred just after 8 a.m. at an apartment complex on Ingomar Terrace in Sterling, caused a small fire that was quickly extinguished by the residential sprinkler system.

Rinehart said the exact cause of the explosion in the apartment unit’s utility closet remains under investigation.

Residents of 11 apartment units were displaced due to possible concerns regarding the building’s structural integrity and water damage, she said.
