Student robbed at gunpoint near Laurel High School

A Laurel high school student was injured during an armed robbery Thursday afternoon near the school after classes dismissed, and officials placed the school on lockdown as police searched for the suspects, city officials said.

The robbery happened about 3 p.m. on a wooded path behind Laurel High School, in the 8000 block of Cherry Lane, said Pete Piringer, a city spokesman. The victim was evaluated at the scene and taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Police believe the victim was robbed by two people, one armed with a handgun, but no shots were fired.

Officials placed the school on lockdown during after-school activities, Piringer said. Police used police dogs and a state police helicopter, and made robocalls to notify residents of the search.

About 90 minutes after the robbery, authorities arrested two teenagers, one male and one female, in the 8100 block of Londonderry Court, Piringer said.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspects also were students, officials said.
