D.C. school officials say police are searching for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a female student inside a Southeast elementary school on Wednesday afternoon.

A statement issued by D.C. Public Schools said the man entered Ketcham Elementary School without permission around 4 p.m. and “inappropriately touched a student.” According to school officials, rumors that a teacher was responsible for the assault are “absolutely false.”

The student told a school staff person about the assault, and school personnel immediately searched the building and contacted authorities, the school system’s statement said.

The suspect was not located. Police continue to look for him Thursday morning.

School officials report that all students at the school, located at 15th Street and Good Hope Road SE, are safe. The school is working with police to avoid another security breach, the statement said.
