Teenager, 16, dies after being hit by cars crossing New York Avenue

A 16-year-old girl from Northwest Washington who was hit while crossing New York Avenue Friday night has died, and police said they are searching for the driver.

The accident occurred a few minutes after 6 p.m. at New York Avenue and First Street Northwest.

Police said the girl was crossing New York Avenue from south to north, outside of the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection, when she was hit by a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville, which was traveling east .

Police said the girl landed in the road and was run over by a tan sport utility vehicle with D.C. license plates. Police said the driver of the Pontiac stopped and remained on the scene, but the driver of the SUV did not.

The girl died at a local hospital at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.

No charges have been filed; police said the major crash unit is continuing its investigation.
