A Severn teenager was hit by a vehicle and killed Friday night as she tried to run across Route 2 in Annapolis, authorities said.

Ajia Marketta Owens, 18, was trying to cross from the east side of Route 2 to the west side at the intersection with West Street when she “ran out in front” of two vehicles about 9:40 p.m., Anne Arundel County police said in a news release. One of the vehicles braked, narrowly missing Owens, but the other, a 2007 Jeep Wrangler, collided with her, police said.

Owens was critically injured and pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The driver and a passenger in the Wrangler were unhurt, police said.

Police said there was no evidence that any of those involved were using drugs or alcohol before the collision, and the driver of the Wrangler did not appear to be speeding or driving recklessly.

Police said it was raining heavily during the crash, and Owens was wearing dark clothing. The teen was not in a marked crosswalk — at the place where she was crossing there are no pedestrian control signals — and the Wrangler had a green light, police said.
