Tree falls on child in Springfield

A child was injured when a tree fell on him near an elementary school in Springfield Monday afternoon, according to Fairfax County officials.

Authorities said the child was alive when he was transported to a hospital by helicopter at about 4 p.m.

The helicopter landed on a field near Rolling Valley Elementary school, 6703 Barnack Drive, but principal Maureen Boland said the accident was not school-related as school was not in session because it was a teacher work day.

Authorities did not say how old the child was, or how severe his injuries were.
