Two killed in violent, three-vehicle collision

Two people were killed in the Largo-Kettering area Monday in a violent, three-vehicle collision that left a Honda Civic smashed between a concrete pumper truck and a tractor-trailer, authorities said.

The two people in the Civic were killed, and the drivers of both trucks were hospitalized with injuries not expected to be life-threatening, authorities said.

A third truck driver was also hospitalized after his truck was rear-ended in the wake of the first collision, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and Cameron Grove Road. Police said the Civic was stopped at a red light behind two tractor-trailers when a concrete pumper truck crashed into it from behind.

The Civic was crushed between the pumper truck and the tractor-trailer, and the tractor-trailer in front of it was propelled into the other tractor-trailer, police said. Both people in the Civic were trapped in the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police did not immediately release the names of those killed, saying they were working to notify relatives of their deaths.

It remains unclear why the concrete pumper truck crashed into the Civic’s rear, and police are probing the incident to determine if any charges or citations are warranted.
