A Prince William County motorcycle officer who was killed in an accident Monday afternoon was driving through a green light with his lights and siren on when his cycle was hit by a minivan, authorities said in an update released on Tuesday.

In addition, two off-duty members of the Fairfax County Department of Fire and Rescue, along with two civilians, pulled the officer away from the wreckage and administered CPR.

But Officer Chris Yung, 35, who had served in the United States Marine Corps and worked for the police department for seven years, died shortly after arriving an an area hospital, according to Prince William County police.

Officials on Tuesday released some new details of the accident, which occurred a few minutes after 2 p.m. at Nokesville Road and Piper Lane in Bristow. Yung had been responding to the scene of another crash when he was struck.

Police said he had his emergency lights and siren activated and a green light as he headed south on Nokesville Road. Police said a 2001 Dodge Caravan driving by a 47-year-old woman from Gainesville pulled out of a shopping center, attempting to make a left onto northbound Nokesville Road was turning left from Nokesville Road into a shopping center when she crossed in front of the motorcycle.

The driver of the minivan and a passenger were not injured, though both vehicles caught on fire. The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Yung is the department’s third officer to die in the line of duty since the force was founded in 1970. Yung had been assigned to the traffic unit as a motorcycle officer, and he is survived by his wife and three children, among other family members.

A vigil is to be held Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Target parking lot at 9900 Sowder Village Square in Bristow. Police said warm beverages will be handed out, and they ask people bring their own candles.

“We would like to reflect and comfort all those affected by this great loss,” according to a statement from police. Yung was a friend of acting Prince William County Police Chief Barry Barnard.
