Virginia State Trooper hit by SUV at state fair dies

A Virginia State Police trooper died after he was struck Friday by an sport-utility vehicle while directing traffic at the Virginia State Fair in Hanover County, the Virginia State Police said Saturday.

Police said Trooper Andrew D. Fox, 27, was working along Route 30 at 9:53 p.m. Friday when the driver of a sport utility vehicle hit him.

Fellow troopers and bystanders rushed to pull the SUV off Fox but he later died at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. Charges against the driver , who is from Doswell Virginia, are pending consultation with prosecutors, police said.

Police were still investigating the incident Saturday, but said alcohol was not a factor.

Fox was assigned to Pulaski County but was in Hanover to help with the fair, police said.
