Waldorf driver drifts off Route 235, hits ditch

A 33-year-old Waldorf man whose SUV drifted off Route 235, struck a ditch, and rolled over five times Thursday morning is in critical condition, Maryland state police said Friday.

Derek Laudenberger was driving northbound along Route 235 through Mechanicsville around 8:30 a.m. when witnesses said his gold GMC Yukon drifted into the grass median, said Sergeant J. Linger. The Yukon hit a ditch and rolled over five times before coming to rest.

No other vehicles were involved, and Laudenberger was the only person in the car, Linger said. He was wearing a seat belt.
Investigation of the accident is ongoing, and police have ruled out alcohol as a factor.

Laudenberger is being treated for life-threatening head and chest injuries at Prince George’s Shock Trauma, Linger said.

"He's still in intensive care on life support," Linger said. "We're told the next 24 to 48 hours is very critical."
