Woman, 80, killed in Arlington after collision with bicyclist

An 80-year-old Arlington woman was killed after a bicyclist struck her as she walked on Four Mile Run Bike Path early Monday morning.

The two collided at about 7 a.m., sending Ita Lapina to the pavement where she hit her head, police said.

According to police, the bicyclist was heading downhill on the path in the 4900 block of Columbia Pike when he saw Lapina ahead of him. He yelled “to your left” and rang a bell to warn her he was coming, police said.

Lapina stepped to her left and turned around, and was struck by the Next Powerclimber bike, police said. The bicyclist, a 62-year-old man, stayed on the scene. He has a minor knee injury, police said.

Lapina was pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital at 6:20 p.m. Monday.
