A woman was shot and killed while her baby was in a car seat nearby in Bladensburg Thursday night, authorities said.
The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. in the 5600 block of Emerson Street, said Cpl. Henry Tippett, a Prince George’s County police spokesman. He said officers were dispatched for a report of shots fired and found a woman wounded. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
Police identified the woman as 33-year-old Shawnta Coleman, of Alexandria.
The woman’s baby was found in a car seat on the scene, Tippett said. He said the child was unharmed.
Ethel Coleman, Shawnta Coleman’s aunt, said her niece had gone to Prince George’s to visit a friend. She said Shawnta Coleman called her mother about 8 p.m. and told her she was headed home to Alexandria, but she never arrived. Family members were contacted by detectives later Thursday evening, Ethel Coleman said.
Ethel Coleman said family members had no idea who might have killed her niece. She said Shawnta Coleman was a mother of four, including the six-month-old girl who was with her when she was killed. She said detectives were trying to locate the man who had given her niece a ride to Prince George’s County.
“She liked dancing, and she liked going to the library, and she spent a lot of time with her kids,” Ethel Coleman said. “It’s so sad.”
A motive in the slaying remains unclear, though initial indications are it may have been domestic related, law enforcement sources said. Shawnta Coleman was not robbed, law enforcement sources said.
Ethel Coleman said other family members are now caring for the six-month-old girl.
