Woman found dead in Temple Hills

Prince George’s County police are investigating the slaying of a woman who was found dead on the balcony of an apartment in the Temple Hills area Thursday morning.

Firefighters were first dispatched to the scene — a low rise, garden style apartment complex in the 4600 block of Dallas Place — just before 10:30 a.m. after a resident called to report smelling an odor of gasoline coming from a neighboring apartment. Firefighters went inside and found a flammable liquid spread about, with a dead woman lying on the balcony, authorities said.

The woman was suffering from some type of trauma to the body, and investigators are treating her death as a homicide, said Cpl. Henry Tippett, a Prince George’s County police spokesman. He declined to say what type of trauma the woman had suffered and said investigators were still working to definitively identify her.

The case is unusual both because of the liquid found inside the apartment — with no sign of fire — and because the woman’s body was found on the balcony. Tippett said the apartment is technically a first floor unit, but the balcony sits above ground level, and the woman’s body would not have been clearly visible from outside.

Tippett said investigators are still searching for suspects and a motive in the case. He said more than one name was on the apartment’s lease, and detectives are working to track down others who might have lived there.
