Woman dies after being hit by SUV in Montgomery

A woman who was walking on a sidewalk in Montgomery County was killed Tuesday night when a SUV lost control in a shopping center parking lot and struck her, police said.

The driver of a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero careened from the parking lot of the Orchard Center in the Calverton area, and then jumped a curb and crossed a grassy area and struck the victim, police said. Authorities responded to the accident near Broadbirch Drive and Cherry Hill Road about 6:15 p.m. and found the woman with life-threatening injuries.

The pedestrian, whom police did not immediately identify, was taken to a trauma center in Baltimore, where she died. The driver of the SUV, who was also a woman, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
