Wrong-way driver dies in Charles County crash

A driver heading the wrong way on U.S. Route 301 in Charles County died early Sunday in a head-on collision with another vehicle, police said.

Eugene R. Kantner, 40, of Hazle Township, Pa., was driving south in the northbound lanes of 301, known in the area as Crain Highway, at 1:36 a.m. His red 1993 Isuzu Trooper struck a black 2007 Toyota Corolla heading the opposite direction. The Corolla’s driver tried to avoid a crash and side-swiped a tractor-trailer driving in an adjacent lane.

Kantner was transported to Civista Medical Center in La Plata, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to Charles County police. The Corolla’s driver, Randy Jerve Datcher, 34, of Nanjemoy, was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, along with his passenger, 32-year-old Shannelle Angela Marshall of Accokeek. Their conditions were unknown.

The tractor-trailer driver was unharmed.
