Former Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, who moved his twin sons from private school to Lafayette Elementary two years ago prior to his unsuccessful re-election campaign, is sending them back to private school--on-line.

According to Lafayette’s year-end newsletter, Andrew and Matthew Fenty will take their sixth-grade courses through Laurel Springs, a private on-line school headquartered in Ojai, Calif. Fenty did not return a message left on his cell phone early Wednesday afternoon.

According to its web site, Laurel Springs is “the school of choice” for promising young athletes and performers looking for flexibility in their academic schedules so that they can develop their gifts. On the school site you’ll find a picture of Oscar-nominated teen actress Abigail Breslin.

D.C. school sources say that that the boys are talented tennis players who spent lots of time during the school year getting intensive lessons.

Fenty fulfilled a long-standing promise in 2009 to place his sons, who had been attending a private Montessori school, in public school. But he kicked up a controversy when they landed at Lafayette, a coveted Chevy Chase elementary school with a lengthy waiting list. Fenty lives in Crestwood, where West Elementary was his in-boundary school. He repeatedly refused to explain how they got to Lafayette, and then-chancellor Michelle A. Rhee said no rules or policies were bypassed.
