While Deal’s Melissa Kim is moving on, another highly regarded DCPS principal who had planned to leave is now staying put. Two school system sources say that Rory Pullens, announced last month as the new head of a performing arts school in the Los Angeles Unified School District, will remain at Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

It’s not completely clear what happened, and Pullens did not respond to an e-mailed request for comment. But one source said that salary was likely a factor in Pullens turning down the top job at the Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts. The Los Angeles Times reported that Eli Broad, the influential education philanthropist, was willing to supplement Pullens’s salary from L.A. Unified.

In any event, Pullens has decided to remain where he has served as principal since late 2006.
