A Stephen Strasburg fastball to the groin

Taking a Stephen Strasburg fastball directly to the groin area sounds like something an MTV reality show person might do as a hilarious stunt leading to 14 angles of replays and uproarious laughter from a gaggle of friends while the stricken star rolled around the ground in noisy agony.

Here’s Major League umpire Greg Gibson taking a Stephen Strasburg fastball directly to the groin area Saturday, and he didn’t appear to find it amusing. Nor did the press.

“Right in the place where you don’t want to get hit. Ever. In three lifetimes,” Charlie Slowes said on the radio call.

“Really feel for home plate ump Greg Gibson. I can think of cooler things than getting hit where he got hit with a 98-mph Strasburg fastball,” Kilgore wrote.

“Greg Gibson just took a Stephen Strasburg fastball flush in the absolute last part of a man’s body you’d want to take that,” Zuckerman wrote.

“Oh my goodness. Poor Greg Gibson. The home plate umpire just took a Stephen Strasburg fastball to the . . . well, you know. OUCH,” Kolko wrote.
