It wasn’t quite to Clown Question levels of hysteria, but Bryce Harper got a fair amount of national attention when he recently told youth campers to “be as sexy as you can.”

For example, that phrase was picked up by Big League Stew. And Deadspin. And Hardball Talk. And Sporting News. And With Leather. And The Score. And USA Today. And so on.

Where did this demand for sexiness come from? WRC’s Dan Hellie asked Harper for an explanation.

“I just think when you’re going out and you’re swinging, you don’t want to be as tense, [to] play the game so uptight and things like that,” Harper said. “Just try to be as flawless as you can, try to be as loose as you can. And when you’re loose and flawless, you’re sexy. So there you go.”

As good an explanation as any. Be loose and flawless, everyone.

Harper also told Hellie he had “no clue” when D.C. last hosted playoff baseball. So he was informed it was 1933. He chuckled.

“You know, that’s the only thing I’m worrying about,” Harper said. “Really trying to win games every single day. As long as we’re in first place and keep things rolling, that’s all that matters to me.

“Everybody gets so caught up in the numbers — what I’m doing, what I did this game or that game. I really think everybody needs to look at our team and really see that this team is unbelievable,” he continued. “We’ve got a lot of guys that can play the game, and it’s a lot of fun to watch.

“Everybody in this town and this city’s really excited for this club. I think the whole baseball world and everybody that knows about baseball is excited for this club. It’s an exciting time for everybody. I’m excited for everybody on this team, and I’m really looking forward to going into the playoffs and hopefully getting deep into it.”

And when asked how he meshed with his older teammates, Harper used one of his stock speeches, about effort and desire.

“I just tried to bust my butt every day,” he said. “That’s what you’re gonna get out of me. I’m gonna give you 110 percent every single day, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if I’m sick, or not feeling well, or hurt, I’m still gonna come in here and play like it’s the last game I’ll ever play.

“I’m gonna approach the game every single day like that. I owe that to this city, this team and everybody around me. So I really just try to approach the game the right way, play it hard, play it the right way, let my play talk and keep my mouth shut most of the time.”

Key word being “most.” And the rest of the time, we can all blog about it.

Also, no one try to shut Harper down. I don’t think he’d like that very much.
