Late in the third period Sunday night, Verizon Center was just about silent.

Then Alex Ovechkin scored, and it was a cauldron of noise. Although cauldrons aren’t very loud. It was a loud cauldron.

The volume didn’t really decrease much until the intermission before overtime, and then Vinny Lecavalier scored, and then it got silent again. An unpleasant silence.
