Monday evening, a certain segment of local sports fans took a break from several weeks of misery and watched a (former) area athlete do some amazing stuff on national television.
I mean, I don’t know about you, but I started getting texts and tweets and the like when Greivis Vasquez suddenly stopped being a rookie afterthought and became one of the key actors in that amazing triple-overtime Game 4 between the Grizzlies and the Thunder. His best moment — that absurd three-pointer that sent the game to double-overtime — is above, and after the game, Greivis talked about that shot.
“It was a good shot,” he told reporters. “You practice that when you’re on the court by yourself. Every time I work out with Biggie — Damon Stoudamire — before we start working out I work on those type of shots. Today it was me, it was mine, and it got us to [double] overtime, but it wasn’t good enough to get the win that we wanted. This is truly gonna motivate me to get better, because you got to take advantage right now, because you never know when you come back.”
And as Vasquez was wont to do during his time in College Park, he took the blame for the loss.
“I made a couple mistakes that cost us the game,” he said, which was obviously not true. “I take full responsibility. I think at this level, at this stage, you’ve got to think about winning and be mature about everything. And it’s tough. I’m hurt. I hate losing the way we lost today, but this is the NBA. It’s not college no more. I’ve got a short memory.”
