Well, turns out that this is just the latest in a series of Hagerstown Sun Civil War bobblehead nights, and also that all of our guesses were wrong. Via press release:

There was a special media conference at the Downtown Hagerstown Visitor Welcome Center featured the unveiling of the new Bobblehead, and it was announced by [Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau] President and CEO Tom Riford and Hagerstown Suns GM Bill Farley, that this year’s Bobblehead is Clara Barton.

“This is the first time that a Bobblehead of Clara Barton has ever been given away at a professional baseball game,” said CVB President and CEO Tom Riford....

The new CVB sponsored Bobblehead, the seventh in the annual series of collectors’ items, had been a closely guarded secret. Several special guests attended the media conference from the American Red Cross management, staff, and board of directors. Also, CVB Board Members attended, including board chair Julie Rohm who was dressed as Clara Barton.

Obviously she was. The event got a decent amount of media coverage on Friday and over the weekend, as it deserved.

“This bobblehead is not about generals and soldiers,” Riford said, via the Herald-Mail. “It makes sense, because it is all about help and all about healing.”

The Herald-Mail also reported that past bobbleheads in the series have included “Civil War Capt. Ulric Dahlgren...Gen. George Washington, Boonsboro romance author Nora Roberts, Maryland Symphony Orchestra Director Elizabeth Schulze, Civil War Gen. Abner Doubleday and Little Heiskell.” That’s a great sentence.

The game is June 23. Bobbleheads to the first 1,000 fans.
