John Beck doesn’t care who the Redskins draft

(Ricky Carioti/WASHINGTON POST)

He expanded on those thoughts during an appearance on ESPN 980’s The Sports Fix this week. And since I’ve seen or heard at least four local sportswriters predict Beck will be the 2011 starter in recent days — Rick Snider, Thom Loverro, Larry Weisman and Mike Wise — this seemed worth passing along.

“Let’s say the Redskins do pick a quarterback. Am I gonna be mad? No,” Beck said. “Because in my mind, I have to say, whoever they pick, I could care less, because I’m going to prove that I’m better than that person....They may say let’s pick this guy because let’s give him an opportunity to learn for a few years so that then, when he does get his [chance], he’s well prepared for it.

“So really, for me, if they draft a guy or not, it doesn’t really matter. I’m trying to be the best guy on the field no matter who they put out there. And in all honesty, really, I don’t care who they put out there. They could put anybody out there; I’m trying to beat ‘em.

“I don’t care who they put; I’m gonna stand next to that person and say I’m trying to beat you. I think that’s the mindset you have to have. You have to say I don’t care who they put me with or against, I’m trying to beat that person because I want it more than they do, and I’m gonna do everything I can do be better than them.”
