So when Mike Wise asks Bruce Boudreau about his job security entering the Stanley Cup playoffs, it gets kind of awkward. But that doesn’t mean his buddies aren’t talking about it.

Around the same time Wise was grilling Boudreau about his future on 106.7 The Fan, ESPN analyst Barry Melrose was asked about the pressure on the Caps and Boudreau on ESPN 980.

“I think the Caps have to win the East,” Melrose said. “They won the Presidents’ Trophy when they were the high-flying offensive Caps, they changed their system, they became better defensively. I just don’t think they can get beat in the first round or the second round. I think they’re too talented, they’ve got too many great players....

“I think this team has to win. I think there’s a tremendous amount of pressure on Bruce Boudreau, probably more so than any coach in the NHL, and he knows it. He knows he’s got a great hockey team, he knows they haven’t won yet, they haven’t even had any playoff success yet. So Bruce knows they have to go a long way in the playoffs.”

Melrose went on to say the Caps have the best team in the East, and predicted them to lose to the Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley Cup Finals
