Since the backup quarterback is always a town’s most popular athlete, we are now, unbelievably, seeing a small wave of support for Rex Grossman. I’ll admit to feeling a few Rex pangs myself on Sunday. Actual Redskins fan J.P. Finlay felt more than a few. He writes:

Rex gives the Redskins a chance to win. With Beck under center, the Redskins have no chance....When a player’s ceiling can best be measured at mediocrity, that player does not belong on the field. Beck has never won a game as a starter. Rex Grossman has been to the Super Bowl. Let’s stop kidding ourselves here.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but it’s sort of amazing to read this longing about a dude whose last start included four interceptions.

Anyhow, it turns out that actor Mickey Rourke is also something of a Grossman fan. During a recent interview with Kevin McCarthy, the actor changed the subject to football.

“Is my favorite quarterback playing or not?” he asked of Grossman. “I love him. Mr. Unpredictable. He can be terribly unpredictable, but that’s why I like him. He’s a trainwreck with balls, really. And he played at Florida. Is he starting? We will have to bring in Grossman to maybe win in the last quarter. He CAN do that.”

These are all very accurate statements.

(The full interview with Rourke will air on FOX5’s morning show next week. MCCarthy’s movie review and interview site is here.)
