When Robert Griffin III spoke during the preseason about the physicality of the game, he made it clear that not getting hit was something he would welcome.
“To be honest, if I don’t get hit in the preseason, I would be very ok with that,” he said on Aug. 6. “Its football, you play it and hits are going to hurt… If I get hit, I get hit. If I don’t, thank God.”
A week later, he reiterated his feelings on hitting the turf:
“I haven’t been hit since that Bowl game back at Baylor in the Alamo bowl. I haven’t been hit since then. Hopefully we can keep that trend going, I am fine with that.”
I think most quarterbacks would say the same, but that ship has definitely sailed.
RGIII was sacked a painful six times by the Bengals yesterday. For the second week in a row, he rushed for 80-plus yards, which makes him an open target and fair game for those hits he’s clearly not very fond of.
Speaking to the media after the game, RGIII talked about the hits and why he says they’re not going to affect his play.
The one thing I won’t do personally is quit or play scared,” he said. “I’ve never played scared in my life, so it doesn’t matter how many times I get hit. I’m going to continue to get back up. Even if they have to cart me off the field, I’m going to get off that cart and walk away.”
He knows he’s not really a superhero, right?
