I have to believe this is the first week in recorded human history that the Nats have been second in these power rankings, although I didn’t try very hard to find 2005 rankings. It’s certainly the highest the Nats have been ranked this season, although they’ve been a constant in the top 10 since the first games were played.
UPDATE: I’m totally wrong. This same week in 2005, the Nats rose to ESPN.com’s top spot. Thanks to a reader for correcting me.
(Here’s this year’s week-by-week breakdown: 16th, 9th, 6th, 6th, 5th, 4th, 6th, 7th, 5th, 3rd, 2nd.)
The voters, if you care, are typically Jim Bowden of ESPN Insider, Tim Kurkjian and Jayson Stark. David Schoenfield of the SweetSpot Blog Network is an occasional voter.
And yes, the Nats also have the second-best record in baseball, which probably matters more than the voting preference of Jim Bowden, but that doesn’t have quite the heft of “power ranking.”
