Dale Earnhardt and RGIII can’t stop talking about each other

The long-running bromance between Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Robert Griffin III has picked up serious steam in recent months.

In February, Earnhardt won the Daytona 500, leading RGIII to tweet his congrats.

Then Earnhardt went on Fox Sports 1 and backed the quarterback. Later the two men engaged in a social media dialog about NASCAR, leading to RGIII’s appearance as the pace car driver at Richmond’s spring race. And that led to the selfies RGIII took with Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson, which in turn led to a million wire photographs.

Earnhardt won again over the weekend. RGIII (and the Redskins) congratulated him again.

And so, of course, Earnhardt talked Redskins again. During his subsequent appearance on ESPN, local guy Hakem Dermish asked Earnhardt about the support from Griffin.

“Well, he knows I support those guys,” Earnhardt said. “I support the Redskins and what they’re doing. They’re getting ready for their season, going through [OTAs] and all that stuff and it’s a lot of fun to read up on everything that’s happening there. So I’m following them every day. It’s great to know that he supports me, that they support me as well.

“They’re an amazing organization, and yeah, it’s the power of Twitter, man, the power of social media. I’ve been exposed to that since only February, but I’ve seen it first hand that it’s an amazing thing, so I’m having a lot of fun there.”

Late last month, during a prep sports event in Chattanooga, Earnhardt also discussed his Redskins love.

The Washington Redskins are special to him, so much so that he occasionally asks for their scores during a Sunday race. And as he told the Best of Preps crowd, one of the guys on his crew has been known to tell him the ‘Skins are winning when they’re actually getting creamed, just to keep his mind on the race.

“I’m like any fan of a team they really care about,” Earnhardt said earlier in the evening. “If they lose, it’s hard on you. If you win, it makes everything better. My fans tell me if I lose, it ruins their week. But if the Redskins lose, it ruins my week.”

He also met London Fletcher in May.
