Gray to help kick off Nationals spring training

D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray will travel to Florida this weekend to help the Washington Nationals kick off spring training.

Gray (D), a baseball enthusiast who plays in a recreational softball league, will throw out the first pitch for Sunday’s game against the Florida Marlins.

Pedro Ribeiro, a Gray spokesman, said the Washington Nationals invited the mayor to participate in the opening weekend of spring training. Gray is paying his own way, Ribeiro said.

The Nationals train in Viera, near Cape Canaveral.

Gray, 70, played baseball when he was a student at Dunbar High School. He often boasts he was scouted by two professional teams, but instead went on to George Washington University.

But he’s been playing recreational baseball and softball for the past 50 years. Gray will return to the District Sunday night.

Tim Craig is The Post’s bureau chief in Pakistan. He has also covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and within the District of Columbia government.
