Broad Branch Road over Soapstone Creek in Northwest Washington will remain closed for repairs after a sinkhole opened in the road last week, according to the District Department of Transportation.

A culvert beneath the road failed, DDOT said, but there currently is no time estimate for the repairs, which “will be relatively complex, and will involve multiple local and federal agencies.”

DDOT will need permits from both the Army Corp of Engineers and the National Park Service, since Soapstone Creek and Rock Creek Park are involved, according to a spokesman.

The agency plans to release a timeline for the repairs later. Access has been restricted to adjacent residences and an embassy
