Bus operator does not have viral meningitis

A Metro bus operator does not have viral meningitis, a transit agency official said Friday. The news comes four days after Metro issued warnings to passengers that the person was ill with viral meningitis.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel wrote in an e-mail Friday that he would not explain why the operator’s diagnosis had changed. He said he was “very limited in what I can say, given the laws on medical privacy.”

On Monday, Metro told riders that the operator worked on the 14th Street Line. Metro disinfected all 164 of its Northern Division buses Monday night.

“We’re relieved to know there was never a public health concern,” Stessel said Friday. “We acted in an abundance of caution based on the information available at the time.”
