The District Department of Motor Vehicles will temporarily suspend penalties on older outstanding parking, photo enforcement and moving violation tickets for six months to encourage people to pay.

Beginning Aug. 1, customers can pay older tickets online at or in person at 301 C Street NW.

City officials estimate that the city will collect $6.3 million through the ticket amnesty program that ends Jan. 27, 2012.

There are some rules: amnesty tickets are eligible for a payment plan but hearings cannot be requested.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) announced the program Wednesday.
