Dupont Circle traffic signals to go dark on Tuesday

Avoid driving near Dupont Circle on Tuesday morning and into the early afternoon. The District Department of Transportation will shut down the traffic signals at 10 a.m. so technicians can install a battery backup system.

Signals will be off for several hours, but they will be turned back on before the evening commute, DDOT said.

Traffic control officers will be on the scene to guide traffic, but there could still be delays for drivers, bicycle riders and pedestrians. So if you can help it, stay away from the intersection of 19th Street, P Street, New Hampshire Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue and Connecticut Avenue in Northwest Washington.

DDOT did similar work last week at Logan Circle.Officials plan to install backup systems at more than 100 intersections.
